A sensitive non-destructive testing technique for use on ferrous materials, can detect minute cracks open to the surface, and some subsurface discontinuities. With inducement of magnetic field, in a ferromagnetic material and dusting the surface with iron particles (either dry or suspended in a liquid), surface imperfections will distort the magnetic field concentrating around the imperfections, thus indicating their presence.
